Meet David J. Snyder, PhD

PictureOn board the USS Constitution, Boston, 2023.
I have been engaged in history and literary fields for my entire career. My first college job was for a pre-publication firm where I learned about typography and modern type-setting. For over twenty years I taught history at universities throughout the US and the Netherlands, offering a wide range of courses in US, Western, and World history, international relations, US diplomatic history, and many others. In those years I also regularly taught writing and research methodology to hundreds of students, lessons I bring daily into my editing work. I bring a rare combination of literary and subject matter expertise to every project I undertake.

I was born in Pittsburgh and remain a lifelong Steelers fan. After a four-year stint in the US Army (98K: Non-Morse Signal Interceptor), I earned an MA in American Studies and a PhD in US history. I have been a Fulbright Fellow (to the Netherlands) and won a prestigious fellowship to the Norwegian Nobel Institute in Oslo, in 2015. My history scholarship includes dozens of articles in top-ranked journals and anthology collections, book reviews, and other pieces. I (co)edited three collections with top-ranked university presses, one of which was named a CHOICE Outstanding Title in 2014. My book, entitled American Power in the Netherlands, was published by Bloomsbury Academic in early 2026. The "Writing and Scholarship" link contains a complete publication vita; check out my blog for other projects, occasional pieces, and reflections on the art and business of writing.

My editing work includes dozens of trade and academic books, dissertations, and academic papers. See the link to my growing portfolio for titles.

I am a devotee of Japanese woodblock printing, Harly-Davidson motorcycles, Little League and high school baseball, travel, single-malt scotch, classic film and cinema, and tall sailing ships.

One of the organizations for which I do a little volunteer work is City of Asylum, a Pittsburgh-based organization that is a member city, and the U.S. headquarters, of the International Cities of Refuge Network (ICORN). City of Asylum is a grassroots-supported neighborhood society that seeks to nurture artistic and creative expression by offering endangered or persecuted writers a haven and a community in which, and from which, to rebuild their writing lives. Their reach and vision is global. I love what these folks do to protect writing, creativity, and the human spirit. Check out their work and support them at: City of Asylum - Protecting and Celebrating Creative Expression.

I am a proud member of the Editorial Freelancers Association. See my profile at: david.snyder.37287 - Editorial Freelancers Association.
