I have been engaged in literary fields for my entire career. My first college job was for a pre-publication firm where I learned about typography and modern type-setting. For over twenty years I taught history at universities throughout the US and the Netherlands, offering a wide range of courses in US, Western, and World history, international relations, US diplomatic history, and many others. In those years I also regularly taught writing and research methodology to hundreds of students, lessons I bring daily into my editing work. I bring a rare combination of literary and subject matter expertise to every project I undertake.
I was born in Pittsburgh and remain a lifelong Steelers fan. After a four-year stint in the US Army (98K: Non-Morse Signal Interceptor), I earned an MA in American Studies and a PhD in US history. I have been a Fulbright Fellow (to the Netherlands) and won a prestigious fellowship to the Norwegian Nobel Institute in Oslo, in 2015. My professional writing includes dozens of articles in top-ranked journals and anthology collections, book reviews, and other pieces. I (co)edited three collections with top-ranked university presses, one of which was named a CHOICE Outstanding Title in 2014. My current project, a book entitled American Power in the Netherlands, will appear with Bloomsbury in late 2025. (My follow-on book project, about American Empire, is the primary subject of my blog; see link to the left.) The "Writing and Scholarship" link contains a complete publication vita.
Since launching my independent editing career I have successfully edited dozens of trade and academic books, dissertations, and academic papers. See the link to my growing portfolio for titles.
I am a devotee of Japanese woodblock printing, Harly-Davidson motorcycles, Little League and high school baseball, travel, single-malt scotch, classic film and cinema, and tall sailing ships.
I am a proud member of the Editorial Freelancers Association. See my profile at: david.snyder.37287 - Editorial Freelancers Association.
